How Vintage Propaganda Posters Shaped Childhood in Communist China.

Propaganda has historically served as an instrument for governments to mold public opinion, particularly during pivotal periods of political upheaval. Following the establishment of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1949, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) initiated a comprehensive propaganda campaign to strengthen its authority and instill communist ideologies. A notable element of this campaign was the production of propaganda posters specifically designed for children, which reflected and influenced the sociopolitical atmosphere.

In the aftermath of the CCP’s victory in the Chinese Civil War and the subsequent founding of the PRC by Mao Zedong (毛泽东), the new government prioritized the indoctrination of the youth to secure its future stability. These posters, influenced by Soviet propaganda techniques but tailored to Chinese culture, were vibrant and engaging, featuring themes that resonated with young people. Children were depicted as heroes in various scenarios — including military settings and agricultural work — to promote values such as heroism, hard work, and loyalty to the party. The posters also incorporated educational slogans that championed collectivism and obedience, while envisioning a utopian future under communism.

Produced under the aegis of the CCP’s Propaganda Department, these posters were ubiquitous in public spaces such as schools and community centers, ensuring pervasive exposure to the party’s ideologies. Their impact was profound, embedding communist values in the minds of a generation and normalizing the CCP’s authority, which helped to integrate these principles into the fabric of everyday life in China.
