Chinese Whispers #06: oil on canvas

Katya: We are already starting to see surprises on our journey and anticipating many more. The truth is that I wasn’t happy with my work and it just sat in my studio making me think what to do about it… ? After a while I decided to share my thoughts and doubts with CJ. We had a very interesting discussion about the project and it’s core idea. Thinking about what does “human factor” mean? …our longing for perfection …is there such a thing as perfect work..? We agreed to let the “mistakes” play their part in the project and see where all of it will take us.

Katya’s studio: work in progress

It’s funny how this project becomes a history record in a way. Every time I work on my next response, things that are happening in my practice find their way into that response. This time it’s coming back to oils because at that time I was practicing with my quick timed oil portraits.

In this image the Chinese Whispers effect is really starting to show — or maybe it’s starting to take hold of me. To be honest, I can say that after an unsuccessful attempt to recreate lost information from memory, I decided to let the “unreal” play. So in this response the eyes are deliberately weird looking and fairytale-ish, and the initial image only echoes slightly.
