Hack, share, learn: 40+ developer projects from the Chingu cohorts
Dip your hand into Francesco Agnoletto’s wine cabinet for a nice vintage & sit back to enjoy this little slice of global gourmet collaboration!
What is this wild place?
I can remember how crazy it felt to be a part of an international team of learners trying to build a full-stack app for the first time. I told my grandma I was working on a project with someone from Algeria, England, USA, and Croatia.
She didn’t believe me.
We just launched Voyage-3 with 100 remote developer teams made up of people from 75 different countries.
Her reaction now:
What is Chingu?
Chingu is a remote dev collaboration community that provides developers and aspiring developers (increasingly data scientists & designers as well) access to remote project experiences and level-up opportunities.
Here is what we do: put motivated people with similar goals together in an environment that gives them the opportunity to level-up in a way they couldn’t otherwise. Our focus is on accelerated learning and creating impact.
Here is how Veronica Mihai put it once:
“For me the Chingu cohorts is finding your tribe of like-minded people. Finding someone to share your projects with, your work with (to get support/feedback)…and maybe even your dreams. And the experience of working with people in remote projects.”
p.s.
— Congratulations Musaab Bakheit, @veloblank, @reece, @mila and @abhi_hk95 who all got developer jobs this week!
We like collaboration that lights up like a Star Wars battle scene
Each square below is a github code repo visualization that represents the collaboration of a Chingu Voyage team.
Note:It takes awhile to put these visualizations together for one project so I just did 15 and repeated them. We’ve facilitated 100s of projects like this though, so you can imagine what that’d look like all together ;p
…Why do I get a feeling what we’re doing isn’t exactly normal? 😆
A few Voyage-2 stats:
- Over 120k messages were exchanged in V2
- 500,000+ lines of code was generated (that’s with the dependencies taken out).
- There was an average of 4.2 commits made per hour for 1008 hours.
- How is that possible you may ask? Well…the Voyage-2 members came from 56 different countries. ;p
Without further ado, the projects. Let’s dive in, shall we?
We build to learn.
Idea Nebulae — Where ideas are born (so we can form teams to build them 🚀)
Stack: VueJS, Webpack, Mongo, NodeJS/Express
Chingu project type: Tier-3 🐻, build-to-learn, build-for-impact 🚀
Countries: Colombia, India, USA (St. Louis & Portland)
Team: Jim Medlock, Parminder Singh, Andrés Pérez, Sarah Schneider
About: IdeaNebulae makes it easy for Web Devs to propose ideas and get feedback from their peers. At Chingu we launch a lot of team projects, and building a tool that allows ideas to flow in for people to build is hugely important, especially as we ramp up the number of teams each session. 💯
Quotable: “We intentionally chose to challenge and to stretch ourselves beyond our comfort zones. Although challenging and sometimes stressful we learn far more than we would have had we chosen to stick with another stack. This team was great to work with and due to the scope of this project we’re continuing it in Voyage 3.”

Chingu project type: Tier-3 🐻, build-to-learn, build-for-impact 🚀

About: This is exactly what we want to see more of in the cohorts — it combines striving for impact with a great idea and design. This is a bot that can provide value not only to Chingu (we’ll eventually be using this ticketing system for the Voyages) but also could be used by other organizations using Slack.
