Engrave it, color it, thermoform it. DuPont Corian solid surfaces can be whatever you imagine it can be. They will now have an added feature — the capability to charge your mobile devices wirelessly.

Corian has been around and is used in residential design, operating theater design and even facades of buildings.

What is Corian?

Well, it is a non-porous material introduced by DuPont in 1967. The material can be molded into any 3D shape and is hygienic (the surface does not support bacteria and fungi) and used in operation theaters. You have seen in in chairs, tables, windows and outer structures, operation tables and in other spaces.

DuPont have come out with “DuPont Corian Powermat”, which will allow you to simply keep your mobile device onto its surface and charge it. The surface will be embedded with wireless charging systems. The DuPont team has joined hands with Power Matters Alliance (PMA) for this venture.

Who’s PMA?

PMA was founded by Powermat Technologies and Procter & Gamble in 2012 and its board also includes representatives of AT&T, Duracell, Starbucks and the U.S. Government’s Energy Star (non-voting).

The news: June 27, 2013 — DuPont Building Innovations has joined the Power Matters Alliance (PMA) and is working with other PMA members on wireless charging solutions for smartphones and tablets that can be effectively integrated into worktops made with DuPont™ Corian® solid surface.

There are existing manufacturers who are building small flat standalone devices with wireless charging capabilities like: Energizer, Nokia & Fatboy, Duracell, Nexus and Qi, to name a few.

With DuPont and PMA’s partnership, the capability of enabling your kitchen and other home-surfaces with wireless charging capabilities is a very real possibility.

DuPont has always been creative in their selection, development and forays into new technologies; and this is a perfect example of that.
