An update on the update!

Post our article announcing the imminent rollout of Android Marshmallow to the first Samsung smartphone, the Galaxy S6 edge, we spent some time with the refreshed device and found even more goodies stuffed in there. So, consider this an update on the update!

Well, Samsung’s Android Marshmallow 6.0 update has actually brought a truckload of positive changes for the Galaxy S6 edge, especially to its curved Edge screen.

To start with, here’s a forewarning: the update is close to 1.2 GB in size, so better be on a broadband connection when you download it!

Now for the good stuff, the update comes with adjustments to TouchWiz, a new vibration pattern, better battery management and granular controls over in-app permissions (allowing you to decide what resident apps can, and can’t access) and a redesigned App Drawer with a scroll bar.

Edge screen-specific changes abound — in fact, the new Marshmallow update will change the face of edge screen! Here are some things that stood out during our testing:

  • The edge screen panel has now almost doubled in size thereby enhancing readability and ability to add and view images. This allows easy viewing of content like sports scores and even brief glimpses of the stock market. To that effect, Samsung has entered into new partnerships with various companies to enhance the stream of information that hits that teeny-weeny screen via apps like Yahoo Finance, Yahoo Sports that now come pre-installed in the Android 6.0 update. There’s a lot more information being delivered directly to the edge screen. Voila!
  • Edge panels feature gains more utility than before, with space for nine edge panels with new entrants like People Edge and Tasks Edge.
Edges are quick access screens that provide access to the respective information or app.
  • Edge panels can now even be customised in terms of placement, transparency and size.
  • Tasks Edge provides access to frequently used app features and tasks.
It also has a new panel called Quick tools which comes with a digital ruler, compass and a toggle for the led light.
  • People Edge allows you to arrange your most frequent and favorite contacts in a single, easy to access area in the. Another after-effect of the update is that these now display contact names below their respective contact photographs.
  • The Apps Edge panel provides quick access to your most frequently used apps. Instead of five, you can now fit ten apps on the Apps Edge! And, like we said in our other article, its not just single apps but folders of apps that too can also be added to the Edge Panel.
  • In terms of new edge content and third party apps, there is a new feature called Naver shopping (a Korean company with internet portal websites) that can be accessed from the Settings menu that caters to mobile shopping.

Overall, we were very happy with the new avatar of the Galaxy S6 edge. It almost felt like a new phone, and the utility and interaction experience is significantly better and feels more fluid and intuitive.

Finally, the increased utility of the edge allows us to feel vindicated of the choice of having bought an edge-device. Maybe it was ahead of its time back then, because its only now proving its worth.

Let’s see what else Samsung springs on us in the coming months!
