Lenovo Zuk Edge with Snapdragon 821, 4 GB RAM spotted online: Report

Lenovo’s got a whole lot going on.

Managing two aspiring brands, that compete in different but very crowded market zones can’t be easy. Pushing Motorola’s (improving and increasingly expensive) Moto line, while also elbowing for space with it’s own Zuk sub-line of smartphones is surely keeping Lenovo up late nights.

Zuk smartphones are taking on rivals from strong budget-brands like OnePlus and Xiaomi who specialise in providing high-end specs at pocket-friendly prices.

Lenovo’s latest Zuk smartphone called the Zuk Z2151 a.k.a. Zuk Edge, is speculated to have a 5.5 inch Full HD display powered by a 2.15 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 with 4 GB RAM and 64 GB or 128 GB internal storage options.

The camera combination is expected to be 13 megapixel and 8 megapixel, for the rear and the front cameras respectively, which would be at par with the standards from this year.
It is expected to run on a 3,000 mAh battery and is tipped include 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, NFC, GPS, and even carry a fingerprint scanner.

Most of this information comes from a recent leak from the Chinese certification authority TENAA. Three pictures of the device were spotted online, revealing key specs of the phablet, including showing it running on Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

The leaked photos also confirm that despite the name ‘Edge’, the phone will not have a curved screen, or a curved display, like the Samsung Galaxy edge devices did. Rather, the bezels appear to be ultra sleek giving it a larger screen real estate.

There’s another novelty on this phablet.

Unlike most other devices, which have the fingerprint scanner either embedded in the home button or on the back, the fingerprint sensor on the Zuk Edge seems to be embedded below the screen. Such a design is rumoured to make an appearance in Samsung’s Galaxy S8, though from the looks of it, Lenovo might have beaten them to the punch.
It reminds me of how Apple was rumoured to be the first manufacturer to remove of the 3.5 mm audio jack, yet being beaten by LeeEco who launched a device without the jack and showcasing new audio-processing technology, a month or so before the launch of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

Back to Lenovo, the company has so far put out three handsets under the Zuk brand — the Zuk Z1 (launched in August 2015), Zuk Z2 Pro (launched in April 2016), and Zuk Z2 (launched in May 2016). While none of these phones broke any records as such, they all seem to have done fairly well for themselves in the market.

So… when can the phone be expected out in the market? Well, truth be told, it is too soon to predict the phone’s international availability. It can quite certainly be expected to be released in the Chinese market sometime this year. It does not, however, seem to be ready enough to be out in the first quarter at least.

Whenever it does come out, it would be another interesting salvo in the crowded budget marketplace, and one hopes that Lenovo is able to do some justice to it’s house-wine.
