Solving Search: An interview with ProductDone CEO and Co-Founder
In exactly 10 days, I’ll be leaving my full-time marketing job at Xero, to venture out into the wide world as a freelancer. I’m acutely aware too, that I will need to spend at least half a day cleaning up my Drive and leave it in a respectable state for my successor.
As I face the daunting task of finding files — strewn haphazardly across my apps — I’m pretty sure it’s a problem faced by others.
And as a freelancer, time is money. Finding stuff quickly is more important than ever.
I sat down with Sam Kamani, CEO and co-founder of ProductDone, to get his perspective.
With a successful career as an entrepreneur, new business owner and freelance consultant, surely Sam had to juggle a lot of data between systems all the time.
I wasn’t wrong.
A quick survey of the tools Sam uses on a daily basis reveals the following:
- Gmail (Multiple emails)
- Google Drive (Multiple drives)
- Dropbox (Multiple dropboxes)
- Teamwork projects
- Teamwork chat
- Skype (Multiple accounts)
- Slack (Multiple workspaces)
- Facebook messenger
- Linkedin Messenger
- Whatsapp messenger
In addition, Sam pays for nearly 12 apps on a subscription basis, everything from Adobe software, to even Canva at one stage.
“I do pay for a lot of apps,” he acknowledges, “if I can see the value in them.”
Sam was working at The Icehouse before launching Product Done, where he first heard about CHIPI.
“Immediately I could see the benefit and the use for it.”
“As a fireman employee, if I need to contact anyone on behalf of that company, I use that email address,” Sam explains. “They have to give me access to their Drive, to a different Slack channel, a different Dropbox.”
“I have documents now spread in so many different places on the cloud, that I could immediately relate to the problem that CHIPI is trying to solve.”
Unfortunately, we don’t know how to search any better. Sam, like most of us, he “just goes and looks everywhere.”
The IDC estimates that the typical knowledge worker spends about 2.5 hours per day, or roughly 30% of the workday, searching for information.
2.5 hours! That’s crazy! And you bet that number is going to go up the minute you try finding something from a few months ago.
“When I have to find something — a client or some conversation from a few months ago — that’s when I’m in trouble, and when I spend a lot of time searching.”
And in Sam’s opinion the problem might get worse. As the workforce gets more distributed, finding things is going to get harder.
That’s where CHIPI can help.
With Slack, Gmail and Hangouts integrated (and more apps coming soon) — we’ll have 80% of people like Sam’s needs covered. Search across your apps in just a few keystrokes, find stuff easily — and most importantly intuitively. Who was that person you were speaking to? Ah right, Frodo. You only chat to Frodo on Hangouts, whereas you deal with Samara on Gmail, so great, you’ve already filtered your results substantially.
As we grow and develop CHIPI, we want to collect as much feedback as we can and make the product better. So if you’ve faced any of the issues we’ve outlined — we want your help!
Give CHIPI a try and let us know what you think.
CHIPI might not be ready in time to help me in my last week and a half at Xero, but I hope it can help you.
