In this weeks lecture we watched the documentary ‘Upgrade Me’ which was about our culture of always wanting the newest devices.

When a product is no longer of use we throw it away. But do we ever stop to think about where away actually is?

We have become so disconnected to the items we buy, we have stopped developing relationships with them. When we buy a product, we don’t think about the responsibilities we have as consumers to recycle or dispose of the product at the end of its life. We are still responsible for each piece of rubbish, as it is still our problem when we get rid of it and where it ends up is inevitably the ocean.

Upgrade culture relies on word of mouth and companies’ planned obsolescence strategies to push new products out. Such as Apple; people will buy their new products because it is the new iPhone. People oblige because they are always looking for the next thing even though what we already have works perfectly fine.
