Tell us about yourself and how you found ChoiceDAO :)

Sure! I had actually heard about it after listening to a podcast that Reshma (founding member) was on. I felt so inspired hearing her story and about this new movement called ChoiceDAO. I started following her on social and learned more about it. I’d only been around Web3 stuff for a couple months, but when I heard about ChoiceDAO it instantly clicked for me, and I just felt like, “This is a cause I can get behind!”

What’s been surprising to you with such a quick jump into Web3?

Definitely how quick everything moves! I’d read that DAOs (decentralized autonomous organizations) move quick, but I don’t think anything can prepare you for experiencing it first-hand. The beautiful part is watching all these people putting their hearts and souls into the project just because they care. That’s so impactful, and that’s the environment I want to be in.

Tell us about how you felt when they announced the overturn of Roe.

It was tough. I was sitting in my office, all by myself, and I got a phone notification from one of my group chats. One of the women shared the news. I read it and just sat there alone. My office was so quiet and dark at that time of day; it felt like a foreshadowing.

hilary found ChoiceDAO via Twitter, where the organization routinely puts out community engagement content such as above

Finding something like ChoiceDAO, that really feels grounded, and feels like it’s ready to create real change, is incredible. — hilary

Did the weight of it dawn on you in the moment?

It definitely hit me in the moment. I thought of how many people would be hurt, and globally, how other countries take signals from decisions the United States makes. It felt awful.

For me personally, and having recently moved from California to Florida, I questioned (and still do) what obstacles I might have to face. It’s knowing that I’m in a new place where all the things I took for granted might not be there anymore. It’s a scary feeling.

What excites you most about ChoiceDAO?

So much of Web3 involves cutting through noise. Finding something like ChoiceDAO, that really feels grounded, and feels like it’s ready to create real change, is incredible. It feels effortless, even as I’m putting many hours into the project. I find it fun and exciting, and even with all the effort on top of my day job, I’m energized by the movement! It feels powerful.

That’s amazing! How do you see ChoiceDAO evolving as it expands?

I like the flexibility of the DAO, and I think it will inevitably have to go through a lot of change — like re-evaluating our governance framework and improving how it operates. Technology and society changes all the time, and I think ChoiceDAO will be able to make something positive of it. We don’t know what Web3 will become, and that’s kind of scary, but with new tools for social good, I can hope it will become something great.

What’s a fun-fact that people might not know about you?

I have a president in my family heritage!

Exciting — can you tell us who or is it top secret?

It’s John Adams and John Quincy Adams. (It’s 99% confirmed… but not 100%… so take that as you may!)
