Eshami peers at the pews. The tired farmer looks distracted, even as he sings mindlessly from his hymn book. The plump noblewoman keeps yawning and rolling her eyes.
But the orphan girl turns around and meets Eshami’s gaze.
The girl’s eyes are flintier than Eshami had expected, as though she were made of steel, but rarely showed it.
Without thinking, Eshami whispers, “What’s your name, my dear?”
The orphan appraises the elf with a wary glance. “Iris,” she says. Her voice is soft but unyielding.
Eshami smiles.
As soon as Mass ends and the congregation all go their separate ways, Eshami rushes over to Iris.
To the elf’s surprise, Iris is now smiling at her. It’s a shy smile, full of hope and expectation.
