A Defender of the Gospel — Study
17th MARCH, 2021
Dear friends, I had been eagerly planning to write to you about the salvation we all share. But now I find that I must write about something else, urging you to defend the faith that God has entrusted once for all time to His holy people. [Jude 1:3 NLT]
Defending the faith to the best of our ability is not a luxury or an indulgence in intellectual vanity. It is the task given to each one of us as we bear witness to our faith before the world. — R.C. Sproul.
To defend means to resist an attack made on (someone or something); or to protect someone or something from harm or danger. As disciples of Christ, it is our duty to ensure that the Gospel of Christ is protected from all forms of attacks through the help of the Holy Spirit.
We find ourselves in a time where the enemy has blinded the minds of many people in the world. There are so many doctrines and theories about the supremacy or otherwise of God, with majority of the world in search of answers to the questions that plague their thoughts.
As disciples, it is our duty to point the lost to the Way both in our actions and in our knowledge of God and His Word. 1 Peter 3:15 (NKJV) tells us to sanctify the Lord God in our hearts, and always be ready to give a defence to everyone who asks us a reason for the hope that is in us, with meekness and fear.
In order to defend the hope we have in Christ, we as disciples of Christ must first of all, study God’s Word! We cannot give a defence if we have not been intentional about studying God’s Word and His ways, and spending time in His presence. Knowledge is power, and our knowledge of God with the help of the Holy Spirit is our defence.
We must study to show ourselves approved so that our answers to the questions that plague others will be accurate and in turn set them free, not mislead them.
In order to be knowledgeable in the things of God, we must study God’s Word continually, meditating on it day and night. And by so doing we will be able to defend the Gospel in which we have believed.
Father, please help me become an intentional student of Your Word. May I be equipped to stand for You and defend the Gospel.
