Be Found Trustworthy

Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found trustworthy (1 Corinthians 4:2 NRSV).

Every Christian has been called a steward of God’s grace to the world. A steward is a person employed to keep order, be responsible for and supervise another person’s properties. As co-workers with God (1 Corinthians 3:9), we have been set apart as a people responsible for demonstrating the goodness and grace of God to the people in our world.

God chooses (mortal) men as stewards as a sign of His trust in us, and hope that we can live out His good purposes with our lives. The question then is, will we continue to be faithful? Can (or will) the trust God put in us be upheld? What kind of steward is God seeking?

The word trustworthy can also be read as faithful, believing, or certain. A certain or trustworthy person, shows consistency of character, is not double-minded and double-tongued but focused on managing what is committed to his or her trust.

The kind of steward the Lord seeks is one who maintains faith in Him (God) and does not rely on his own strength and strategies. It is imperative to acknowledge that it takes God’s ability to maintain His blessings. A trustworthy steward makes deliberate efforts to enquire of the Lord in everything.

Recognising the need to rely on God creates in us a sense of accountability. Our accountability is not to the people observing us, and what we do, but to the One who has called us and freely given us His gifts. Can God trust you with more than He has given you already? Does God find us as trustworthy stewards?

Father, thank You for believing in me and entrusting me with your gifts to serve my generation. Help me not to forget that everything I have is from You; I am only a steward. I receive grace to be faithful to Your calling on my life in Jesus’ name. Amen.:
