Be Wise in Your Actions

Christ for Youth International

Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom. [James 3:13 NKJV]

Wisdom is sought after by many. And sometimes in the pursuit of wisdom, we learn wise sayings and hear wise words. In fact, we are privileged in the company we keep here at CYI.

We are surrounded by wise leaders who painstakingly seek to imbue us with what they have learnt over the years. Their faithfulness to their task is evident in all the messages they have preached to us over the years.

We tend to fall for the misconception that hearing wise words, makes us wise. However, it is not those who hear that are wise, it is those who do! Our verse for today tells us that if someone says they are wise or lays claim to wisdom, we should see it in their conduct towards carrying out their work. The verse also tells us that wise people do their work in the meekness of wisdom. Wisdom ought to humble you, not puff you up. If truly you are wise, then you see the work you do as a privilege and as an avenue to honour God.

Our generation has taken to characterizing people as wise because they reveal some truths to us. A truth that we would probably know if only we were diligent in reading. But the litmus test for wisdom is seen in our actions.

How do you approach the work you have to do? Are you proud or boastful of all you know? Or are you meek in the face of the wisdom you have learnt? Our answers will vary, but the goal that we ought to reach is quite simple, don’t just say you are wise, be wise! Wisdom is an action word.

Help me, Heavenly Father, to be meek and appropriately apply the wisdom I have gained in every aspect of my life. Amen
