Becoming Before Going
12th OCTOBER 2025
“It is through him that we live and function and have our identity; just as your own poets have said, ‘Our lineage comes from him.’” [Acts 17:28 TPT]
In today’s devotional, we will discuss our anchor scripture with different illustrations. But Before we start with any of the illustrations we must know this fundamental truth that when we come under the government of Jesus, we begin to truly know and understand our identity.
A creator defines the identity of what he creates. A practical illustration is: If a craftsman builds a table but calls it a chair, then by his authority, it is identified as a chair. In the same way, God, our Creator has given us our true identity from the very beginning. However, through the fall of man, we came under the influence of a new government, which distorted our understanding of who we truly are. Yet, the fall was not the end. God had a redemptive plan even before the fall. This is the ministry of reconciliation through Jesus Christ and that once we accept His lordship, we begin to rediscover and walk in our true identity.
Another illustration is the story of the prodigal son which places the first into perspective.Just like man before the fall, the prodigal son can be likened to a prince. But he left his father and ended up feeding pigs which was contrary to his royal identity. However, when he was reminded of his father and his identity, he went back home. His father met him halfway and prepared. a feast for him and changed his clothes to reflect his true identity. The prodigal son came back under the government of His father. We have this same privilege through Jesus’ ministry of reconciliation. This illustration reveals the heart of God towards His Children. Whenever we return, He restores us, and reminds us of who we truly are.
However, being under Jesus’ government does not automatically mean that we walk in the fullness of our true identity. We must continually renew our minds through the Word of God. Paul urges us in Romans 12:2: to be transformed by the renewing of your mind” and further emphasises it Ephesians 4:23. The Word reveals who we are and it’s important to renew our minds to walk in the fullness of our God given identity. As opening Scripture reveals, it is, In Him that we live and move and have our being. Jesus is the Word as revealed in John 1:1. It’s in the word that we know that our life is hidden in Christ, and we know that we are seated in Christ in heavenly places. Furthermore, the word reveals to us that we are co-heirs with Christ, everything he has we also have. Again, the word reveals that we are a royal priesthood, a chosen generation. He has made us kings and priests. There are many more gems in scripture that reveal who we truly are.
Coming under the government of Jesus is the first step. But to walk in the fullness of your identity, you must renew your mind daily with the Word of God.
Spend time today searching the scriptures about your identity. You are who God says you are.
Prayer: Father, thank You for sending Your son to die for me and that by Him, I’ve been reconciled with You. Father, help me to renew my mind daily so that I can walk in the fullness of the identity You have given me.
