Becoming Like Jesus

“Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did.” [1 John 2:6 NLT]

The name Christian means a follower of Christ. It first appeared in the Bible in the book of Acts 11:26. It was used to refer to the disciples, they had a resemblance to Jesus Christ and hence the name Christians. Today we carry the name Christians and that means we are followers of Christ and His disciples.

As we read in the four gospels all the amazing things Jesus did, we are made aware that He expects us to do similar. The Great Commission! He commissioned us to do what He did while He was on earth, to go and make disciples. He loved us and laid down His life for us, and He is asking us today to lay down our comfort, our own lives for the lives of our brothers. On the night Jesus was betrayed He washed the feet of the disciples, and after He got up He said, “So if I’m your teacher and Lord and have just washed your dirty feet, then you should follow the example that I’ve set for you and wash one another’s dirty feet. Now do for each other what I have just done for you.” John 13:14-15.

Christianity is following Jesus, what He did we also do. The beauty of this walk is that He did not leave us to figure out how we can walk the walk on our own. He gave us the Holy Spirit, who enables us to become like Christ Jesus. Producing fruits is through our yielding and obedience to the Holy Spirit, apart from that we can not do it on our own. Jesus said in John 15, He is the true vine. To carry out the Will of God in our lives means we have to listen to His leading through the Holy Spirit. As we continue to listen and adhere to the Holy Spirit we are being changed, our character, identity, and thoughts are being transformed. We become like Christ as we obey the leading of the Holy Spirit.

So dear friends, let us be obedient to the Holy Spirit and be the light of our world. Following Jesus Christ means that in good and bad times, we carry our cross and follow after Jesus Christ.

Lord, I pray You help me to continue to seek You every day. Help me, Lord, as I carry my cross every day and follow after You, that I will not forget who I am in You. Help me to walk in my true identity. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
