Even in the Dark

I was naked when I ·was born [came from my mother’s womb], and I will be naked when I ·die [return there]. The Lord gave these things to me, and he has taken them away. Praise [Blessed be] the name of the Lord.” Job 1:21 EXB

Job’s story is one of the most well-known in the Bible. Even if we haven’t read the book, most, if not all, of us are aware that Job was afflicted for no apparent reason. We would expect anyone in his position to react to these tragedies with outrage, disbelief, grief, and depression, among other emotions. However, in today’s verse, we see that Job’s first reaction to the tragedy is to acknowledge and praise God.

As God’s children, we have been told on numerous occasions to worship God and put our faith in Him in good, bad, and turbulent times. Job is a perfect example of how to recognise God’s light and give Him the praise He deserves, even when we appear to be in dark places.

In Psalm 42:11, the Psalmist says, ‘Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God’.

May we never stop singing God’s praises. Even in times of sorrow or distress, we must remember who our Heavenly Father is and allow praise to well up in our hearts. “Even when it’s hard to find the words, louder then I’ll sing Your praise,” Hillsong United sings.

Praising God in every season of our lives as we fellowship with Him must be our reality.

Precious Father, help me to get to the point where when I’m pressed on all sides, all that comes out of me is praise for Your Holy Name.
