Faithfulness in Leadership
12th MAY 2020
“In Jerusalem, Jehoshaphat appointed some of the Levites and priests and clan leaders in Israel to serve as judges…These were his instructions to them: “You must always act in the fear of the Lord, with faithfulness and an undivided heart.” [2 Chronicles 19:8–9 NLT]
In the governance of a people or any institution, there is, more often than not, some form of decentralisation. The leaders of the decentralized units are given the right to exercise the authority vested in them by the superior authority. They are therefore accountable to a superior and must ensure that they exercise their authority and perform responsibilities within the limits prescribed by the superior.
King Jehoshaphat charged the clan heads to serve faithfully with an undivided heart, always acting in the fear of the Lord as he appointed them to serve as judges over God’s people. Steadfastness, loyalty, unwavering commitment, devotion, dependability, trustworthiness are words that should come to mind when you think of faithfulness. Everyone, assigned to a responsibility, must possess these qualities if he/she wants to efficiently accomplish any task assigned him/ her.
A great kingdom thrives on the people’s collective commitment to the Kingdom’s agenda.
No kingdom can flourish with unfaithful subjects. As citizens of God’s kingdom, He has set us over cities, nations and the earth and has given us responsibilities. God in His wisdom and graciousness has also equipped us with various gifts to do His kingdom work by the power of the Holy Spirit.
In the parable of the talents (Matt 25:14 -30), we learn how much God values faithfulness in everything he entrusts us with. Faithfulness always requires hard work. As leaders, we must remember that the charge to serve God faithfully was not given by man but by God Himself (John 15:16). We must bear in mind that every task God has called us to is time-bound and there will be a time for accountability (Matt 25:19,29–30). We are all not gifted the same, each person’s gift is unique and can be used in God’s kingdom. (Romans 12:6–8)
Dear God please help me to work hard for your Kingdom so that You can call me faithful. As I meditate on these truths, Holy Spirit, please move me to faithful leadership.
