Follow The Way

… because as he (Jesus) is so also are we in this world [1 John 4:17 ESV].
As you read through the gospels and study Jesus’ life and ministry, you cannot overlook the fact that He truly exemplified everything He taught and commanded us to do. In every human setting, it is often a struggle when people have to follow a leader who does not ‘walk his talk.’ Fortunately, for us as believers, we have an impeccable model of leadership, who practised what He preached.
Everything Jesus directed us to do, He did Himself, leaving us examples to follow suit. He didn’t merely teach us, but He showed us how to live out the sermons He preached by setting examples with His own life. Jesus taught about prayer and was a man of prayer, often withdrawing to a solitary place to pray [Mark 1:35]. He also exemplified servant leadership by washing the feet of His disciples [John 13:5]. All through the gospels, we have a plethora of examples Jesus set for us to learn from. Since Jesus Christ was fully man when He walked the shores of this earth, we can also live like He lived and walk as He walked, and that includes following his model of leadership.
In Mark 10: 42–45 Jesus Christ dismissed the standards of the leadership of the gentiles as worldly and presented to us His standard: “So Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them. But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of everyone else. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
As our opening scripture teaches; in this world, we are just like Jesus. Do you want to become a great leader? Study the life of Jesus and fashion your life after His. His leadership was marked by a life of service, culminating in a painful sacrificial death so that we may have eternal life.
Jesus has shown us the way of leadership that will impact generations, that is, a perfect model of leadership characterized by service and sacrifice.
As we pattern our lives after His and rely on His Spirit to empower us, we will become great leaders.
Dear Lord, please help me to be a true disciple of Jesus, living my life as Jesus lived. Empower me with Your Spirit so that my leadership will be marked by service and sacrifice.
