Fullness of Joy

You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand there are pleasures forevermore. [Psalm 16:11 NKJV]

Our quest for happiness has led us into materialism. The assumption is that the more we acquire, the happier we will be. Happiness is a fleeting emotion which is dependent on external circumstances. The moment those things or even people we delight in are taken away, a host of negative emotions such as sadness, depression, fear and anxiety set in. Joy, on the other hand, comes from God as part of the salvation package Christ paid so dearly on the cross for.

It is possible to be joyful in difficult times. Joy needs no smile in order to exist. The Joy the Lord gives is permanent, it undergirds our spirits, bringing to life peace and contentment in even the worst of circumstances.

Our main text for today tells us that fullness of joy is found only in the presence of God. When we spend time praising God in His presence, it allows our hearts to be filled with joy. We can never fall prey to the evil schemes of the devil when we are filled with the joy of the Lord.

Proverbs17:22 says “A joyful heart is good medicine”. Joy, like medicine, will keep our bodies strong and healthy to accomplish the good works that God has planned for us.

John Wesley, at 85 years old, gave six reasons for his good health and longevity. The sixth reason, he said, “To having had so little pain in my life and so little sorrow or anxious care”. John Wesley encountered so many problems in his life, however, it is clear that he was a man whose joy came from the Lord alone.

The bible admonishes us to rejoice knowing what our Lord Jesus Christ did on the cross for us. True joy can be obtained in the heartfelt gratitude for God’s love, mercy and grace.

Dear Father, thank You for the joy of Your presence, which is powerful to drive away any and every sorrow. Amen
