God Authorised You.
17th MAY 2022
Jesus, undeterred, went right ahead and gave his charge: “God authorized and commanded me to commission you: Go out and train everyone you meet, far and near, in this way of life, marking them by baptism in the threefold name: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.” Matthew 28:18–19 MSG
The creator of a thing has overarching authority over the said thing. God created the world and so everything belongs to Him. It, therefore, goes without saying, that He has authority over all things He created. This authority is conferred on us as part of our call to kingship. Picture a president or a king being sworn into power; they are normally given a symbol of some sort (sword, staff, signet ring, etc.) signifying the power and authority that comes with their position. In the story of Esther, for example, any decree issued by the king or on the king’s behalf which was then sealed with his signet ring was irrevocable, and another decree had to be issued in its place.
Well, you are that king, that president, that leader and the difference is, in your case, you have been given this authority by the Creator of the entire universe. This authority is symbolised by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. If you have the Holy Spirit, you have all the authority you need! Thank God that with His call to kingship comes his authority to pull down and build up!
Knowing that we have God’s authority backing our call to kingship, must encourage us to move out to fulfil this call with boldness. We have seen how people with very limited power step out in boldness and authority to mete out evil even sometimes. Nobody should be more authoritative than the Christian in carrying out their leadership/kingship duties. This is a wake-up call for us to step out boldly, with all the authority from God, made possible by Christ, through the Holy Spirit. He said He would never leave us nor forsake us, therefore even in times when it doesn’t seem like it, we will always have this authority — we just need to exercise it.
The same call and commission Jeremiah was given in the following verse and the disciples were issued with, in our focal verse, is what God is charging us with: “Then the LORD stretched out his hand, touched my lips, and said to me, Listen, I am giving you the words you must speak. Today I give you authority over nations and kingdoms to uproot and to pull down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant.” [Jeremiah 1:9–10 GNBDC]
Father, we come against any spirit of cowardice, fear and of powerlessness. The Spirit You have given to us operates contrary to these, and we refuse to go against the flow of Your Spirit. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
