Grace to the Humble

But he continues to pour out more and more grace upon us. For it says, “God resists you when you are proud but continually pours out grace when you are humble.” James 4:6 TPT

Grace is a gift from God to His children. However, the state of our hearts determines whether we will accept God’s gift.

At the start of James 4, Christians are admonished to stop relying on earthly wisdom and to stop living by worldly standards. However, in verse 6, we are reassured that even though we have been living by worldly standards, we have not outrun God’s grace. We can be confident that grace is still available to us. This grace is extended to all who put their trust in Christ.

At the same time, James reminds us that God will only give this gift to the humble. Grace and pride will never be compatible. While grace will not deal with us based on anything in us but only on who God is, pride demands that God bless us based on merit, real or imagined.

God invites us to be humble in order to receive more grace from Him. He exhorts us to turn from our sin of self-reliance and yield to Him. This allows us to receive with gratitude all that He has prepared for us, as well as accept with humility all that He chooses to withhold from us.

God’s grace is not earned through humility. Rather, humility positions us to receive the freely given gift of grace.

Dear Father, please grant me the wisdom to humble myself in such a way that I can receive whatever You have for me today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
