Holy Spirit is Our Helper [Sex]
28th FEBRUARY, 2021
For this is the will of God, that you should be consecrated (separated and set apart for pure and holy living): that you should abstain and shrink from all sexual vice, 4 That each one of you should know how to possess (control, manage) his own body in consecration (purity, separated from things profane) and honor, 5 Not [to be used] in the passion of lust like the heathen, who are ignorant of the true God and have no knowledge of His will, [1Thess.4:3–5 AMPC]
In a world where almost everything in mass media is being sexualized to capture the people’s attention, as believers, we have been called to a life of holiness and purity (1 Thess 4:7; 1 Peter 1:14–16). Just as every product comes with a manufacturer’s guide, the pleasure of sex is a gift from God to be enjoyed by humans with one caution: it is to be enjoyed within the confines of marriage.
One thing we know without a shadow of doubt is that God’s rules and discipline reflects His love for us and He has given us all we need for life and godliness — this includes the gift of the Holy Spirit. How does the Holy Spirit help us in our purity journey? “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” [John 14:26]
Our consecration is the Father’s will as the first line of our opening scripture clearly states. Thus, the Holy Spirit dwelling in us:
• teaches us self-control — one of the fruits of the Spirit (Gal 5:23) so that we can learn to control our body and its desires.
• reminds us of the Father’s will by nudging/cautioning us when we entertain things (like what we watch, read, listen to, places we go, conversations we have, etc.) that sow seeds of impurity in our hearts.
• convicts us of sin when we ignore the nudges so that we return to the throne of mercy.
• helps us in our weakness because in our own strength, maintaining purity is not the easiest of things to do.
What a companion/helper/comforter we have! Doing all it takes to conform us to be like Christ. No matter your marital state, we are all called to be sexually pure in both our actions and our thoughts. It is indeed to our advantage that the Holy Spirit is in each of our lives as believers, however, He was ultimately sent to us that God may be honoured & glorified in every area of our lives.
Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Your Holy Spirit to come and dwell in us. Sweet Holy Spirit, enable us to live a pure life that will give honour to God. In Jesus name, Amen.
