“Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” [Amos 3:3 KJV]

In our opening scripture, the Prophet Amos chastises Israel for straying from the Lord. The entire chapter describes the estranged relationship between Amos and God. The prophet thus prophesies Israel’s impending doom; the ramifications of the nation’s waywardness.

Right from creation, we see that God has always desired man to be in constant fellowship with Him. Even after the fall of Adam, God did not relent in restoring His relationship with mankind and ultimately offered His Son so that we can always enjoy fellowship with Him. Mankind, on the other hand, has a high tendency to stray from God’s paths, and the consequences often spell disaster. This implies that we cannot walk in the ways of our Master or do His works if we are not walking closely with Him.

A true disciple is one who, by walking closely with His teacher, has caught on to his Master’s vision.

As our opening scripture puts it, two cannot walk together unless they agree. Some Bible commentaries have shed light on the kind of fellowship there must be between “the two.” “The two” must always desire to keep each other’s company, and they must go by the same road to the same place. This proves that a disciple and his Master must always walk in agreement in order to arrive at their desired destination.

A Master’s vision cannot become a disciple’s vision outside of His presence. It takes constant fellowship and a commitment to nurture the relationship to be able to see how the Master sees and work His works.

As Christ’s disciples, if we will have His heart, love what He loves and detest what He detests, we must walk in step with Him. As we dwell in His presence, His vision becomes our vision. We will begin to see people as He does. Our lives will be a fountain through which His love is poured out. We will become His hands and feet wherever we find ourselves. Where we used to see barriers and obstacles, we will begin to see opportunities to make Him known. Be a disciple who closely walks with the Master.

Dear Jesus, thank You for reminding me to walk closely with You. As I fellowship with You, make Your vision clearer and clearer to me so that I never stray from Your path. Amen.
