Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Rise and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” This is a desert place. 27 And he rose and went. And there was an Ethiopian, a eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasure. He had come to Jerusalem to worship 28 and was returning, seated in his chariot, and he was reading the prophet Isaiah. 29 And the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and join this chariot.” ACTS 8:26–29 [ESV]
The purpose of the Holy Spirit in us is to lead us. He comes to abide in us so we can live out the life of Christ. From the scripture, Philip was led to go to the Ethiopian eunuch. It is only after Philip heeded to the leading of God that he realized that he had been led to the eunuch to evangelize to him and baptize him.
There are times the Holy Spirit can lead us to some seemingly strange and uncomfortable places. He may do this without giving us the full details about what we will encounter on our way. However, as God’s children, we are expected to trust and obey Him fully as we go in faith. Philip was led down a desert road. The desert is a very hard place to be with little or no life yet, he obeyed God and went in faith.
Philip’s obedience to the voice of the Spirit led to the salvation of the Ethiopian eunuch. This Ethiopian eunuch was no ordinary person: he was the treasurer of Ethiopia (we can say he was the Minister of Finance in his country), he was wealthy, educated and a person of great authority and influence. It is safe to assume that the eunuch took the gospel back to his country and told people about his encounter in the desert.
As leaders when we heed to the leading of the Holy Spirit, many come to the saving grace and knowledge of God.
In order for us to be led by the Spirit, we must constantly yield our will to His. If we do not learn to surrender to the Holy Spirit, we will not be able to accomplish the work that God has given us to do as leaders.
Heavenly Father, forgive me for not obeying the leading of your Spirit. Holy Spirit, from now on where You lead, I will follow. Amen.
