Look to what Lies Ahead

No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, [Philippians 3:13 NLT]

The author of the letter to the Philippian church was St Paul the Apostle. Paul has quite a colourful history. He was first known as Saul of Tarsus, and he persecuted the followers of Christ. He wreaked a lot of havoc among them before his personal encounter with God caused him to convert.

Can you imagine the guilt and accusations he had to face after he came to accept the truth about Christ? Yet Paul is one of the more known and decorated apostles. Mainly for his many letters to various churches he had established, which are now books in the new testament.

In one such letter to the Philippians, while addressing the perfection that Christians are expected to emulate, Paul reveals a key principle. Keep moving forward! Press on! Forget what has been and move towards what will be.

Many of us struggle with issues from our past. They ran the gamut from relational to societal to personal problems. These events in our past may leave us feeling unworthy of God or keep us away from seeking God. Sometimes, even in the thick of our relationship with God, the past pops up in various ways and cause us to slip.

But you are reborn in Christ, and you must walk with that mentality. So even when the future looks bleak because of our past experiences, we shake it off and like Paul recommends; we forget it. For what lies ahead of us as we pursue Jesus, is paramount. Indeed, the future glory shall more than compensate for the present suffering. So keep pressing on, and let nothing hold you back from your walk with God.

Lord Jesus, thank You for the gift of new beginnings. Please assist me not to keep my mind and heart on past events, both successes and failures. Grant me the wisdom to do what is right in the present, even as I keep looking forward to all the marvellous things that are yet to come. Amen.
