Only God Teaches Love
27th JANUARY 2023
Now concerning brotherly love, you have no need for me to write to you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another. 1 Thessalonians 4:9 AFV
Our ability to love one another is not something that we can take credit for, it is God who teaches us how to love. It is not something that we can learn through our own efforts or through the teachings of the world, but rather, it is a gift that is given to us by God. Thus, He is the one who can teach us how to rightly use it efficiently.
As we read in John 13:34, Jesus commands us to “love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” It is through the example of Jesus, who laid down his life for us, that we are able to understand the true meaning of love. And it is through the power of the Holy Spirit that we are able to put this love into action in our lives. We see this same truth reflected in Galatians 5:22–23, which tells us that “the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” It is through the work of the Spirit within us that we are able to bear the fruit of love in our lives.
The love that God teaches us is not a love that is based on emotions or feelings, but rather it is a love that is rooted in the character and nature of God himself. That is why is it a love that is consistent, regardless of how we are feeling in any given situation. It is a love that is selfless, sacrificial, and unconditional. It is a love that is willing to lay down our lives for others, just as Jesus did for us.
As we look around us, we see a world that is in desperate need of this kind of love. We see a world that is torn apart by conflict, hatred, and division. But as believers in Jesus, we have the opportunity to be a light in the darkness, to be a reflection of the love of God to those around us.
This is not an easy task, and it will require us to die to ourselves, to put the needs of others before our own, and to be willing to love even those who may be difficult to love. But as we look to Jesus, as we allow the Spirit to work in us, we will be empowered to love in a way that brings glory to God and brings hope to the world around us.
Heavenly Father, as we seek to love others in the way that Jesus loved us, energise our light in the darkness, and cause the reflection of Your love to fall on the world around us. We open our hearts and minds to receive Your teachings on how to love, and walk in that obedience, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
