See which part of the field they are harvesting, and then follow them. I have warned the young men not to treat you roughly. And when you are thirsty, help yourself to the water they have drawn from the well.” [Ruth 2:9 NLT]

Looking at the story of Ruth and Boaz as one that typifies the church and Christ, we can learn some wonderful lessons. We have learned that God is love and, having full knowledge of all that we are, He loves us completely. With all that Ruth had gone through in her life, when she showed up in the fields of Boaz, she was accepted and welcomed.

Being welcomed and accepted did not mean she could do whatever she wanted. Just like Christ loving us and giving Himself up for us so that we may be welcomed and accepted by the Father, there is a pattern that He wants us to follow. Love shows us the way to purpose. “See which part of the field they are harvesting, and then follow them.” It was in the obedience of Ruth that she found a harvest even where she did not sow.

Just like Boaz warned the young men not to mess with Ruth in any way, guess what God has done for those who obey the instruction to follow the path He points them to. The love of God provides us with His security even when it seems He is absent. So long as Ruth remained in the field, following as she was told, absolutely no one could dare mess with her. It is simple, you mess with Her, and you do not have her to answer to, but Boaz. And that is the same with God.

Finally, could it be that many a time, when we are thirsty and do not know where to find water, it is a sign that we are not following the path God pointed us to? God knows that in our quest to fulfil our purpose and find our harvest, we will be thirsty at some point. And His love still makes preparation for us. Ruth, by all accounts, would have been very confident to approach the well and drink from the water available. When we pursue purpose, and we are protected by the love of God, we too will be confident to drink when we are thirsty.

Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me and directing my path. Thank You for showing me where the harvest is, and for securing my protection and provision for the purpose for which You have called me. Thank You for making room for me in the field of life, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
