Passion and Affliction

“When he sees all that is accomplished by his anguish, he will be satisfied. And because of his experience, my righteous servant will make it possible for many to be counted righteous, for he will bear all their sins.” ‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭53:11‬ ‭NLT‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

One sure way to measure how passionate someone is about a dream, goal, relationship, task or just about anything is how much he is willing to suffer for it. No wonder, the final week of Jesus’ earthly life is called The Passion Week. He suffered not only physical pain but the emotional turmoil of betrayal and abandonment from His closest friends.

The likes of Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr, Rosa Parks endured much suffering and social injustice to fight for what they believed in. These heroes and heroine put their lives on the line because they had a bigger picture in mind. Paul also said in Philippians 3:10 that he wanted to participate in Christ’s suffering and become like Him in his death. This could only be a pure passion for what he had come to believe in.

As we mature in God, we will not cower at the least sign of discomfort or hardship as we pursue our passion for God. This is because we will come to terms with the fact that our passion to serve God will sometimes come with afflictions of all sorts. We will persevere through our trials and let it build in us great character. It may not be easy, but as we rely on God, He will bring us through every storm.

In Isaiah 53:11, it was prophesied of Jesus, “He shall see the labour of His soul, and be satisfied…” Paul, like Jesus, found satisfaction as he endured the hardships he went through because he was confident that his suffering was for a worthy cause and more importantly of an eternal significance. That is why he could write in Romans 8:18, “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.”

Dear Father, I thank You for Your Spirit that strengthens and comforts me through all my hardships. Please help me to grow through my trials that I may be perfected in glory.
