Power to Heal
24th SEPTEMBER 2020
Now it happened on a certain day, as He (Jesus) was teaching, that there were Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting by, who had come out of every town of Galilee, Judea, and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was present to heal them. [Luke 5:17 NKJV]
The power of God is just amazing. Who would have thought that the Pharisees would be out listening to Jesus’ teachings, let alone be eager to receive healing from Him? Yet, that is exactly what happened. This conveys the truth that God shows no favouritism, with regards to His power working in those who fear and obey Him.
The world we live in is filled with people who are sick in diverse areas of their lives: emotionally; psychologically; physically; and even for some, spiritually. It is God’s heart desire that each one of us is healed from whatever ails us. This is why Jesus paid the price for the redemption of man with His own life by dying on the cross to save all of mankind.
In Mathew 28:20, Jesus instructed his (old) disciples to “teach these new disciples (the people who were going to believe the gospel).” The Great Commission is not only about preaching the gospel to the world, but it also includes teaching new disciples to obey the commandments of the Lord. Jesus knew that the new disciples were going to need healing. Thus, under the right teachings, the power of God will be made available to heal them from all manner of afflictions.
In Acts 10:34–44, the story of Cornelius and Peter, as Peter was teaching Cornelius and his household about the Good News of Christ Jesus, the power of the Holy Spirit came upon the people. This is why as believers, we ought to daily listen to the teachings of our shepherds. We must also make it a point to study the Word of God and read books that are based on sound biblical doctrines from Christian authors.
When we heed to the teachings of the Good News, we expose ourselves to an atmosphere that allows the power of the Holy Spirit to heal us.
From our main text, we realize that the people came out and sat to hear Jesus’ teachings. Likewise, as believers, we must come out from our places of comfort and receive the teachings of Christ. It will bring healing onto us, and the power of the Spirit will be made available to us.
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your gift of healing given through the power of Your Holy Spirit.
