Purposed for Fellowship

He appointed twelve that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach and to have authority to drive out demons. [Mark 3:14–15 NIV]

Say these words to yourself, “There is a WALK before the WORK.” One of the greatest sources of frustration known to man is trying to do something you have not built the capacity for. It can be physically, mentally, emotionally, psychologically and spiritually draining.

Think about this: Jesus lived 33 years on this earth, but apart from a brief episode in His life at age 12, we did not hear anything about Him until He was 30 years old. Everything we heard about Jesus; every sermon, parable and healing was accomplished in three and a half years. By His life, our Saviour proved to us that there is a necessary waiting period — a time of incubation — during which the Father shapes us to be effective for His purposes.

Today, as believers, we are called as disciples — followers — of our Lord Jesus. If Jesus really is the same yesterday, today, and forever, then it is worth noting how He called His first disciples. The Bible says that “He appointed twelve that they might be with him and that he might send them out…” Do you see that? Look at it in reverse: He would not send them out if they had not been with Him. Many have tried to do God’s work without first being with Him.

It is good to do God’s work. We have learnt that it is good to do good! But there is a limit to the good we can do when we have not been with the Lord. Don’t be a boy/girl trying to do a man/woman’s job because you skipped some stages.

In this Kingdom, nobody skips grades — the Holy Spirit will take you through the process.

In the end, all the good you do (what we call ‘Ministry’) must be an overflow of your love relationship with God. Take some time to just be with the Holy Spirit today in fellowship: being loved and loving Him back. You were called for this too.

Father, help me to realise each day that I was created to have fellowship with you.
