Rise, Take Up Your Bed and Walk

Jesus Still Heals.

People are suffering — people are really suffering — and we could ask for answers, but to be honest, a person in despair needs a solution, not a dissertation. In light of this, I want to show you this gem from Jesus’ life:

The Man at the Pool of Bethesda (John 5: 1–15)

Some time between the year 8 BC and 5 BC, a man did something pretty bad (you can infer this in verse 14) thereby opening a door to sickness, and became paralyzed. He would spend the next 38 years of his life paralyzed — unable to wipe his own butt.

5 to 8 years after this man fell sick, his solution was born in a manger in a far-away town called Bethlehem. It’s simple math, really — Jesus’ ministry lasted from age 30 to 33. If the man was really paralyzed for 38 years, then his condition was at least 5 years older than Jesus. Agreed?

The nice thing is Jesus did not care. He did not give a hoot about the fact that the man had been sick longer than he had been on earth. Better still, even today, he doesn’t care how long you’ve had that condition. It is perfectly “healable”.

Back to the story…

When Jesus met him he asked, “Do you want to be made well?”

The simple question required a simple answer, “Yes!” But our guy was so used to living with the condition that he began to explain to Jesus why that was such a dumb question.

He was like, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.”

(In case you are not familiar with the story, the water of the pool developed healing capabilities every now and then when an angel of the Lord came down and stirred it.)

Jesus, realizing that this guy had barely 2 kilobytes of faith left, released words that this man would latch on to and pull himself up to his feet. He said, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.” And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked. Such medical disrespect!

Listen! I don’t care how long you’ve been sick, or tired, or sick and tired of being sick and tired… Jesus heals you! I need your faith to rise up with mine and connect with the reality that by His stripes we were healed!

It’s the same Jesus! It’s the same power! Join in agreement, and in the words of the Master, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.”

He answered them, “He who made me well said to me, ‘Take up your bed and walk.’ ”
John 5:11

He’s Still Moving
