Sin Will Not Rule
27th NOVEMBER 2022
Therefore, do not let sin reign in your mortal body, so that you obey its desires. And do not offer any parts of it to sin as weapons for unrighteousness. But as those who are alive from the dead, offer yourselves to God, and all the parts of yourselves to God as weapons for righteousness. For sin will not rule over you, because you are not under law but under grace. Romans 6:12–14 HCSB
This is a truth that perhaps, as young people, we need to assimilate if we will walk in victory over sin. The fact that one may not be walking in victory over sin does not imply that victory is non-existent. This is why the verse in the Bible that tells us, My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you [the priestly nation] have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you that you shall be no priest to Me …, is a great caution to us.
As a result of grace, we are alive from the dead, through faith in Christ Jesus. This means that sin cannot rule over us, for we have no death in us [referring to our spiritual nature]. Unfortunately for us, our mortal body still has death in it, hence, we are in a place where are able to offer it or parts of it to sin as a weapon of unrighteousness. That is why the Bible tells us, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous… Please note that the Bible is not encouraging anyone to sin; [but if] is God’s acknowledgement of our limitations as humans, and He knows when our limitation gets the best of us, as opposed to us offering our bodies to sin.
When we share our testimonies of how we overcome the temptations of offering our bodies or part of it to sin, we unconsciously create accountable witnesses around us. This is healthy and good for our faith walk because, when we start tapping our foot to the tune of sin, there are people who know our testimony. People who can come up to us and remind us of our testimony and keep us away from dancing to the tune of sin.
Also, the Holy Spirit can speak to us through these people to show us how to offer ourselves to God, and all the parts of ourselves to Him as weapons for righteousness — that we may not sin. This offering of ourselves is not under the ritualised nature of the law, but under grace, motivated and sustained by love — knowing who He is and the depth of His sacrifice for us. Remember the word, For sin will not rule over you, because you are not under law but under grace.
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your mercies and grace towards me. Thank You for taking away death from my spirit, so that sin cannot rule over me. Forgive me for all the times I have offered my body and its members to sin. I position myself under Your grace and offer my body and its members to You, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
