Unquenchable Flames [Part 1]
5th OCTOBER 2020
“And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched: 44 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.” [Mark 9:43–44 KJV]
I once watched a movie about two tough cops and their adventures. One seemed to have changed, not wanting to hurt anyone even on the job. The other found his behaviour strange and upon enquiring, his friend asked him if he believed in hell. He replied no, and his friend said, “too bad, hell believes in you”.
Hell is real. It sure believes in you, even if you don’t believe in it. It is unfortunate that this truth is hardly spoken of or heard. Unfortunately, hell is as real as heaven. Jesus in His ministry, preached more about this place than He did heaven. In the continuing verses of the above scripture, Jesus further states that it is better to lose one’s foot and even one’s eye, if they will cause you to sin, than to be thrown into the fire that never quenches. God is not just a loving God, He is LOVE! Nonetheless, it does not change the fact that He is just and the Ever-Righteous judge.
Jesus on so many accounts emphasised the seriousness of hell. As one writer puts it, “Jesus described hell as a place of eternal torment, unquenchable fire, where the worm does not die; a place where people will gnash their teeth in anguish and regret. Unfortunately, hell is a place of no return (people CANNOT come from there to warn their loved ones on earth).”
The only way into eternal life is through Jesus Christ.
Hence, those who do not receive Him as Lord and Saviour have no identification with Him and cannot be where He is. As it says in Matthew 25:30, such will be thrown into outer darkness, a place of grief, torment, weeping and grinding of teeth.
Do you know, that as God’s dear children, we have a role to play in all this? Do you know you’re the Most High’s partner? As put by Keith Green, “This generation of Christians is responsible for this generation of souls on the earth”.
Holy Spirit, I humbly pray this day that You will make see how real hell is, and grant me the strength to share the gospel in order that others may be saved from the grip of hell in Jesus’ name. Amen.
