Wisdom from Parents
14th AUGUST, 2021
My son, hear the instruction of your father; reject not nor forsake the teaching of your mother. For they are a [victor’s] chaplet (garland) of grace upon your head and chains and pendants [of gold worn by kings] for your neck. [Proverbs 1:8–9 AMPC]
We live in a dangerous world today and as time proceeds it worsens. There is so much going on at the same time because of the influence of friends and social media, consequently shifting our generation towards the things of the world. This is an era where we imperatively have to take heed to the words of our parents.
Probably, you may think that what your parents say is boring or archaic, but it will save you. They have seen things you have not perceived and apprehended things you have not heard. Therefore, they know what they are doing. They cherish you too much to watch you go astray. They have invested significantly in you and refuse to leave you be destroyed by the foolishness of the world. Learn from their instructions and also learn from their failures, even the ones you see that they may not talk about. You do not have to repeat the wrong choices they may have made.
Remember, as you heed their instructions and teachings, make sure to keep the word of God as your standard. Do not dwell solely on your parents’ counsel and forget the word of God. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. If you realise that a particular instruction or teaching goes contrary to the word of God, pray and beseech God to turn the hearts of your parents to Him and His truth [Proverbs 21:1].
By honouring your parents, you express your reverence to God, and it is an act of worship to Him. You cannot claim to love God and dishonour your parents. There is definitely a reward for honouring your parents — you will be celebrated, favoured and glorified. Remember, an athlete who does not enter a race to win by the set rules obtains no crown and medal at the end of the race.
Ha! See the grace and favour that finds you because you honour the wisdom of your father and mother.
Father, I thank You for the lives of my parents and my guardians. May I, in humility, honour them and obey their instructions according to Your will. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
