Wisdom, The Principal Thing

Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore, get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding. Exalt her, and she will promote you; She will bring you honour, when you embrace her. She will place on your head an ornament of grace; A crown of glory she will deliver to you. [Proverbs 4:7–9 NKJV].

Have you ever been told; go to school, get a job, make money, get married and have children? It seems our central focus of life comes from such areas, and we are taught to pursue it with everything we have. While those are admirable, proverbs tell us the principal thing we must pursue; wisdom. This means money, a big house or car, or marriage are not the first things we must get. Why? Because a man or woman without wisdom can waste money and become poor, lose their house or even ruin their marriage. Wisdom gives us the ability to become stewards of everything God gives us. It aligns our priorities with God’s priorities.

What is this wisdom? It is Christ, 1 Corinthians 1:24 tells us that Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. How do we ‘get’ Christ, who is this wisdom? By focusing on his word. John 1:14 tells us that the word of God became flesh and dwelt among us, he is Christ. But simply reading the bible as a storybook does not bring wisdom. We must understand the Spirit behind what we read; we must get understanding. This understanding comes from the Holy Spirit. He guides us into all truth (John 16:13). That way, we can apply the word of God in our lives.

We also get wisdom by listening to the word of God through sermons such as the Kingdom Podcast by Pastor Roderick Agyekum. This is a good way to keep our spirits fed with God’s word, and it causes us to transform our world and expand the Kingdom of God. God cannot entrust His kingdom to fools. Therefore, get wisdom and seek understanding.

When we exalt wisdom, and we embrace her, the scripture says, she promotes us, brings us honour and places an ornament of grace and a crown of glory on us. God’s wisdom makes us distinct from the world, places us in positions of dignity, and crowns us with glory. It means when people come to us with problems, we respond with the wisdom God gives us, we bring solutions to complex issues wherever we find ourselves by using God’s principles found in His word.

Heavenly Father, help me to seek Your wisdom, grant me an understanding of Your word, that as I exalt wisdom, my life would be used for Your glory and honour.
