Have you ever seen Baked Alaska? Perhaps you remember it from the Great British Bake Off scandal last year or like me enjoyed it on family occasions as a child. I used to be amazed at how the ice cream was still solid in the middle after coming out of the oven, I felt like my mum was Star Baker.

Well, despite the alluring sweet smells and yummy content of that particular baked good, I am actually referring to a new theatre show called ‘Baked Alaska; Time to Change the Temperature’. Christian Aid has teamed up with Operation Noah, the Diocese of Lichfield, and Riding Lights Theatre Company to produce this new show — all about climate change.

At Greenbelt this summer, I had the pleasure of watching a bite-sized preview of the show. As the rain was tumbling down outside the Christian Aid tent, the four actors climbed on to the stage with a variety of bright costumes and instruments to start the high energy performance.

You might imagine a play about climate change would be a little dry — but it wasn’t anything like I had expected, I was captivated throughout; carried through a range of emotions from laughing out loud to almost shedding a tear. The show ingeniously blends together an upbeat, lively and humorous narrative rooted in daily life, with the heartbreaking reality of the lives of many around the world affected by climate change.

Through jolly songs and a good dash of puns, one thing is for sure, Baked Alaska presented the audience with the serious question of the opportunities we have to make a change, and the importance of the choices we make.

I won’t say anything more — I don’t want to spoil the show for you, but what I will say is that it’s the perfect show to take your friends and family to if you’d like to get them passionate about climate justice.

So with over 50 tour dates around the UK from 16th September to 18th November, and tickets only £12 — what are you waiting for?
