His Reign Will Last Forever
“You, O LORD, reign forever; your throne endures from generation to generation.” — Lamentations 5:19
Hassanal Bolkiah has been the Sultan of Brunei since 1967 and the prime minister of Brunei since its independence from the United Kingdom in 1984.
He is one of the few absolute monarchs in the world. The eldest son of Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III and Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Damit, he is the 29th sultan to ascend to the Bruneian throne, following the abdication of his father in 1967.
Hassanal Bolkiah is currently the longest-reigning monarch upon the death of Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom on 8 September 2022. He has reigned for more than 56 years.
Under Brunei’s 1959 constitution, the sultan is the head of state with full executive authority, including emergency powers. On 9 March 2006, Brunei’s constitution was amended to make the Sultan infallible under Bruneian law.
There is a King whose reign is eternal. Jesus Christ reigns through all of the ages. Today in prayer, give thanks to the Lord that His throne endures from generation to generation.
