Looking at Philippians 3:12–16 shouldn’t be done hastily. In fact, no Christian scripture should just be brushed over. You need to dive in, but that can be overwhelming. A great way to study any scripture is in bite size pieces with methods such as the SOAP study method.

How to Use the SOAP Study Method

Don’t worry. This is not as overwhelming as you might think. SOAP stands for: Scripture, Observations, Application, and Prayer.

Start with reading the scripture. I would recommend that you read it twice and then put it aside. Come back to it later while your brain works on it the initial readings. That way you don’t rush into it and make assumptions. You allow the words to sink in.

Then note your observations. What do you get from the words? What hits you hard? You can use this time to research terms or read commentaries on the same scripture. Explore the Word and see what pops out at you. I highly suggest you keep a notebook or journal as you do this for reference.

After reading and observing, it is time to see how it all can be applied to your own life. It really becomes personal here. Just reading doesn’t really do it. Application has to be made.

Then we end with prayer. Humility and thankfulness is the best ending.
