I’ve always loved reading, and as an editor I get to read countless stories. My work as an editor spans from magazine and online articles, to academic essays and personal statements (though, I’m always up to a challenge editing new works).

Below are examples of my work as a Copy and Line Editor.

Print:

Black and Blue: Thought on Police Brutality from within the NYPD (09/2016) The Campus magazine

Black and Blue was first published in the September 2016 print issue of The Campus magazine. I teamed up with Nick Middleton in order to help get his story across as clearly and concise as possible. This included interviewing him and getting his story from word-of-mouth to onto the page. From there, I worked with him on making his story open up more to his audience — making a story that is not only his own, but one that many people can read and also say that it is their story as well. The last step was copy editing and making sure everything was polished and ready for printing (above is the printed result). Black and Blue was later included in an award-winning digital media project titled This Is Us.

“Ticket for One: Adventures of a First-time Solo Traveler” (03/2017) The Campus magazine

Ticket for One was inspired by Janice D’Gracia’s time abroad — an adventure she embarked on alone. When she handed her draft to me, she wanted me to focus on making her story fit on the page she was given for this issue — the problem was that she had so much to say. The above is the end result of me cutting 300 words and having her story read as clearly and smoothly as it did before having been edited.

“Here’s Your Degree: Dispute Over Who Certifies Grove Degrees” (09/2016) The Campus magazine

Elihu Fleury wrote “Here’s Your Degree: Dispute Over Who Certifies Grove Degrees” with one thing in mind — to bring the truth to light. His month long investigation resulted in him writing a 10 page draft. Above is the final version edited version of his draft.

Personal Essays/Statements:

Above are before (left) and after (right) screenshots of an essay I edited for Johnny Handsome. His essay spoke about the importance of having confidence in yourself and the role that his last name played in building the person he is now as well as the professional he aims to become. Johnny requested that I focus on both copy and line editing.

Above are before (left) and after (right) images of a scholarship essay I edited for Marissa Walach. Her message revolved around the idea of wellness within medicine. Marissa requested that I focus on copy and line editing.

Above are before (left) and after (right) images of a personal essay written by Fusayo Filaoye. She wrote about her personal experiences and how they drew her closer to a profession in medicine. Fusayo requested that I focus on copy and line editing, and that I also cut the word count by 100 words.

Reports:

Above are edits I applied to a lab report focusing on substance abuse within the Asian American community. The report required adherence to the APA style guidelines.
