For Pioneering Tunneling Design for an Archeological Site, City of David National Park won first place in the “Oddities of the Underground” category in the ITA’s sixth annual contest. The Old City of Jerusalem Project was tagged as “Tunnelling in the Service of Archaeology,” and beat Norway’s Spiral Tunnel (Drammen) to the top spot. Winners of other linear projects include the Sydney Metro City & Southwest Project in Australia and the Chengdu-Guiyang High-Speed Railway in China. This online competition included contestants of over 23 countries.

Viewed from the Engineering Scope, the impressive design manages structural stability from metallic structured continuous arches, in synergy with the interaction of geotechnics (Soil Mechanics) from above. The System is tailored to give support to the excavation, as the above soil supports the existing Jerusalem City. Israeli Antiquities Authority IAA, Israel Nature and Parks Authority INPA, and City of David are unveiling the frozen Jerusalem of the year 70, when Rome decided to destroy the Temple and Vanish all the Jews from the Premises of the Land. The Path is one of the rising access to the Temple, and during the excavations numerous artifacts, evidence of the Jewish Rebellion and the Roman Total Oppression have been rescued.

This methodology of expanded metallic arcs allow manual excavation in safe conditions, while the soils are coated with a concrete film. The structure is dynamic, as it advances in the digging, at the same time that assures the extraction of loose material with a continuous line. Each 6 meters of arch is made up of 1.2 meter wide archs that adapt to the conditions of the terrain. by the
