Burden Of Shame — Letting Go Of Shame
Many people carry the burden of shame. Shame creeps in slowly. Shame makes a person want to hide. It is an intense feeling of guilt, condemnation, of one looking down on themselves, of regret. Shame can make a person hate themselves, it makes a person feel like a failure, it makes a person consider themselves as less than.
Shame shrinks a person’s image of how they see themselves, it makes a person see themselves as tiny and as not good enough. A person in shame may have a hard time even looking at themselves in the mirror. Shame is destructive, it makes a person live a life of defeat and not accomplish the purpose for which God has for them.
A person in shame looks down instead of looking up.
Shame is a burden carried by many people, and most of these people do not know how to break loose. The enemy wants people to live in shame because he knows shame hinders a person from accepting the love of God upon their lives.
The person in shame considers themselves not worthy of any good thing, and because of that, they start accepting less-than, they accept mistreatment, they accept abuse, they accept living a defeated life because satan has deceived them into thinking that they do not deserve any better. It is time to let go of the burden of shame.
Shame is defined as “a painful feeling of humiliation or distress caused by the consciousness of wrong or foolish behavior; a regrettable or unfortunate situation or action.” Shame enters into a person’s life through various means. It usually comes in due to mistakes and sins a person has committed in their life, whether in words, deeds, or even in thoughts.
Maybe you fornicated or committed adultery, maybe you had a child out of wedlock, maybe you indulge in lustful activity, maybe you were taken advantage of and abused in every way possible and now you blame yourself, maybe people have been backbiting you, maybe people have gossiped and slandered you, maybe your friendships or relationships have failed, maybe your children have taken a path in life that is not good for them, maybe you have become the laughing stock among the people you used to think were your friends, maybe someone is spreading lies about you, maybe you have sinned in so many ways and some of your actions and words you cannot even tell anyone.
The enemy wants us to indulge in sin, and after sinning, we start being buried in shame and carry the burden of shame. Sin may appear appealing initially but the price paid is always out of proportion.
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23.
When people sin, many end up regretting and ashamed of what they did or said. The enemy burdens people with condemnation and makes them think that there is no hope for them. The enemy burdens people with the burden of shame.
Thank God that in Christ we have hope. The Bible tells us that whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Thank God that we can tell Him anything and not worry about Him telling other people what we have told Him. In this world, there are very few trustworthy people. Most people you tell something or you approach for advice or help will go ahead and tell other people, and soon, what you told them will become a subject of gossip. Thank God, He is faithful and trustworthy. When we confess our sins, repent and accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we are saved, by grace through faith. We become sons and daughters of the Most High God. We become new people, changed from the inside out.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. Now all things are of God, who has given the ministry of reconciliation, that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation. 2 Corinthians 5:17–19.
Never allow the enemy to bury you in shame. Do not carry the burden of shame. Call upon the name of the Lord, ask Him to forgive you and deliver you. God has promised His children in His Word that we will not be put to shame.
Do not fear, for you will not be ashamed; neither be disgraced, for you will not be put to shame; for you will forget the shame of your youth, and will not remember the reproach of your widowhood anymore. Isaiah 54:4.
As the Bible says, there is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. Ask God through Jesus Christ, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to empower you to live in accordance with His Word and to develop in you a Christ-like character.
When we know who we are in God and when we are firmly rooted in Christ, we start living a victorious life. We claim the promises of God upon our lives. When God says that there is no more condemnation for us who are in Christ Jesus, irrespective of what we have done or said in the past, we take that truth of God and start living in it.
We start looking up instead of down. Our help only comes from God, maker of heaven and earth.
Shame is not your portion. Do not allow the enemy to condemn you because of what has happened in your life. Tell the devil he is a liar. God loves us, He is a God of reconciliation, He is a restorer. Nothing is impossible with God. God loves us so much, and He made the ultimate sacrifice, sending His Only Son, His sinless Son, to die on the cross for our sins. We were bought by the blood of Jesus, we are priceless. Never allow the enemy to tell you otherwise.
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. John 3:16–17.
