I decided to create Chronic Illness Chronicles to house my own stories and create a publication for disabled and chronically ill writers to share their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. We’re too often sidelined by nondisabled people who want to speak for us instead of amplifying authentic voices.

Chronic Illness Chronicles will feature the following:

  • Fiction
  • Personal memoirs
  • Essays
  • Nonfiction

Stories don’t necessarily have to directly engage with disability or chronic illness, but they should be related in some way. For example, I recently wrote about shoe shopping as a disabled woman.

Please only submit to this publication if you’re a disabled or chronically ill writer. However you define that is up to you.

For formatting, please use the general format you see in this story. Here are the main elements:

  1. Each story should have a main title followed by a subtitle with the capitalization shown above.
  2. Include a picture with alt text and credit to the photographer. If you’re using your own picture, you can simply label it, “Photo by author.”
  3. Separate larger chunks of text for readability.
  4. You may include one call to action or a link to another story at the bottom. If you’re going to add a story, include the full URL so that it creates a button like this:

You don’t need to be a paying member of Medium to write for this publication. Whether or not you choose to meter your stories is up to you.

If you’d like to be added as a writer, follow the publication and comment with your Medium ID below. (I would also love it if you’d check out my work or follow my account, but that’s totally your choice.)

Please verify that private notes are enabled on your story before you submit. This will allow me to communicate with you for any changes or revisions.

I reserve the right to make minor edits for spelling, grammar, or formatting. I’ll always ask your permission for any major changes.

New writers are always welcome! I’m so excited to start this publication, and I can’t wait to see your work.

My email is emmajohnsonwrites@gmail.com. Please reach out if you have any questions, concerns, or feedback to improve accessibility.
