On March 10, the annual Super Sunday was held at A.L Davis Playground in the Uptown area of New Orleans.

Super Sunday is a day where someone can experience a lot of the New Orleans culture in one setting. The day consisted of a multitude of second line organizations, brass bands and Mardi Gras Indians parading around the local area. You can also get a bite to eat and taste some of the wonderful food found in the great city of New Orleans.

Thousands of people, both natives and visitors, filled up A.L Davis to enjoy the festivities.

Byron Jones, the Big Chief of the Westbank Warriors Mardi Gras Indians, stated, “Super Sunday is a day filled with New Orleans culture. I love parading up and down the streets of this beautiful city. Indians get to show off the hard work we put into our hand stitched costumes and the second line organizations get to show off their wonderful footwork (dance moves); getting down to music being played by all these different bands out here.”

The event was family friendly and also allowed pets; there were activities for young children as well such as bouncy houses, face painting and even a playground.

“I love to see the community come together as one and that is exactly what Super Sunday does. When people talk about our city they usually talk about how dangerous it is here, but events like this shed light on those negative comments. I love this city and everything about it and I come to both the Uptown and Westbank Super Sundays every year,” said Uptown resident Walnika Green.

The event was hosted by Jerome Temple, also known as the world renowned DJ Jubilee. Temple is also a member and grand marshal of the Young Men Olympians Benevolent Associations (YMO). YMO is the oldest second line organization in the city of New Orleans starting in 1884. They are also one of the featured second line organizations at Super Sunday.

Vice President of YMO Waldorf Gipson III shared, “This is our day. Our club house is two blocks away from this park and one of our members is not only the host of this event, but he also runs this park. So we have to show out when it’s our time to hit the streets! And, when we not showing out on the streets guests can come get some Nola style fried catfish and potato salad from our stand.”

YMO was not the only featured organization at Super Sunday. The Lady Buck Jumpers Social Aid and Pleasure Club, the Sidewalk Steppers of the Treme and Big Chief Timu and Tribe were amongst many of the featured organizations showing out and spreading the New Orleans culture at Super Sunday.

For those interested the Westbank Super Sunday will be held at Landry-Walker High School in Algiers on April 17. Come out enjoy the fun and experience some New Orleans culture.
