“Should I take my jacket and shoes off?” I asked the nurse, a hitch of nervousness in my voice. “I don’t want to mess up the number.”

She smiled a little sadly, tilting her head slightly. Her blond ponytail slipped over her shoulder. “No, it’s okay. It won’t make that much of a difference.”
