Unlocking Texts by Merging Two Into One

As I have mentioned in an earlier article, one of the cryptological methods employed within the Gospel of Thomas¹ is the splitting of a clue into two consecutive sayings that then need to be merged back into one. For instance, in the article I have just linked to, there is the following saying:

Saying 19: Five Trees in Paradise

Jesus said, “Blessed is the one who came into being before coming into being. If you become my disciples and listen to my message, these stones will become your servants; because there are five trees in paradise which don’t change in summer or winter, and their leaves don’t fall. Whoever knows them won’t taste death.”

Okay, reading that saying in isolation, it's about one who existed before existing and how that is extra beneficial. Also, if we become disciples of Jesus these stones will serve us. The reason those stones will serve us is because of these five trees in paradise. These trees remain unchanged in both summer and winter. Plus their leaves never fall. Taken together it probably means that these trees are covered in green leaves all year. And if you know about these five trees, you will never die.
