Forecast: Fall-like conditions to continue Tuesday

Forecast surface map for the continental United States for Tuesday, October 11. Source: Weather Prediction Center

Our first real taste of fall this season continues Tuesday as high pressure remains firmly in control. Temperatures will start out in the low 50s for many of us (will be slightly warmer at the coast). NWS has 51 as the low at the airport; this would be the coolest low temperature at the airport since May 6, when it was 49 degrees.

High temperatures will top out in the low 70s once again. Calm weather is expected to prevail Tuesday and for much of the week, much to the relief of a weather-weary community cleaning up from Hurricane Matthew.

The next seven days: Calm, warming

High pressure will continue to be the big weather player for the rest of the week. After a chilly Wednesday, highs in the upper 70s and lows in the low 60s will become common with passing clouds at times. You have to look hard for rain chances; NWS has a slight chance of showers on Monday. We’ll see how this develops.

Tidal flooding concerns this week

As the moon’s perigee approaches, astronomical effects will combine with onshore winds to generate some salt water flooding near times of high tide possibly starting as early as Tuesday. The National Weather Service may issue coastal flood advisories if the tidal departures in the harbor are great enough to breach 7', which is the threshold for shallow coastal flooding in Charleston.

I did a longer post focusing on the flood threat and other elements of Matthew’s aftermath to watch out for; give it a read!

Tuesday’s tides (and astronomical predictions)

  • High: 3:51 AM (5.2 feet)
  • Low: 10:07 AM (0.9 feet)
  • High: 4:34 PM (5.9 feet; watch departures on this one for possible coastal flooding)
  • Low: 10:55 PM (0.7 feet)

The Tropics

Tropical Storm Nicole will help to kick up a little swell this week as it heads toward Bermuda, where it is expected to make an impact as a Category 2 hurricane.

Otherwise, no new tropical trouble in the Atlantic to speak of. (And thank goodness for that!)

Have a great Tuesday!
