[Chu News — Sports Column / Mark Chu] If you know a little about the sport of basketball, most likely you know Jordan and James, arguably the two best players. And you have probably heard or even wondered yourself: who is “better?”

First of all, I have to be very clear: I am NOT a loyal fan of either one and am not here to recruit more fans for any of them. Yes, when I was a kid, everybody loved Michael. When I was in the Ph.D. program researching prejudice, one professor pointed out that even racist people like Jordan. But in terms of “the Greatest Of All Time” (GOAT), there are many factors to consider and many more different perspectives.

And therefore, there are many different answers.

As a scientist who cares a lot about this game (probably too much), I’d like to try to voice my opinion.

This GOAT debate is meaningless unless we at least consider the following factors, which by no means is a complete list of all the crucial factors:

1. Basketball is a TEAM sport — it takes a team, not an individual, to win.
