I will never forget my first time.

His name was Mike Meeks (@uthmanmike) and he and I were visiting about youth ministry. I was in my senior year of Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. He was several years older than me and already well into his ministry career. His church was across the street from mine (#biblebeltprobs) and we quickly became friends. At first we only had three things in common: 1) the passion to see teenagers lives changed through Jesus Christ. 2) Coffee. 3) Halo.

We were sitting in my office and he sparked up a conversation about design. He asked how I sent out graphics, did t-shirts, etc. I exclaimed that I outsourced everything because I didn’t know how to do any of it. He smirked and suggested I learn. He helped me get a copy of photoshop elements and I’ve been teaching myself ever since then. That was in 2005. My first question was full of confusion and bewilderment:

What’s a layer?

Since then, my passion for design has grown and it’s my way of creatively expressing myself. Below is a sample of my collection with descriptions and stories to go with them:

One Weekend / Community wide Disciple Now in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. First design attempt. / 2007

Community Christmas Party. / 2007

First Logo Design and Identity. / 2007

Commitment Card for students pledging to wait until marriage to have sex. / 2007

Next attempt at Logo, Identity, & Branding. / 2008-2011

Events, Advertisements, Sermon Series, Random. / 2010-2012

Random Personal Projects. / 2012

Most recent design work goes to serving as a College Pastor. / 2012-1013

College Ministry Logo and Identity. / 2012

I feel like I still don’t know anything as it relates to design and the creation of it through photography and programs. But I love it. I enjoy it. And honestly, I love doing for the local church where I serve.

There are lots of more talented people out there than me. My hope is to continue to be inspired, create, and share.

Why should churches settle for bad design? Post your collection, share your story, describe the context, collaborate, and get inspiration. #opensource
