Lawrence Norden, Deputy Director of the Brennan Center for Justice, helped new The Daily Show correspondent and recent immigrant, Ronny Chieng, understand just how “fucked” we are when it comes to voting technology.

It is heartening to see the show covering the topic. For his efforts, Chieng had the joy of seeing the 1997 refurbished copier machines that help the greatest citizens in the greatest democracy ever vote. The highlight (or lowlight) has to be when an election official in Michigan admitted they were buying old parts off eBay to repair their voting machines.

For that depressing bit of honesty, I’m recommending Michigan’s own Founders All Day IPA to accompany this post and help you drown your voting machine sorrows.

A study from Harvard and MIT estimated that faulty voting machines caused delays and long lines that disenfranchised between 500,000 and 700,000 voters in 2012. The Brennan Center sounded the alarm in September about a pending disaster if aging machines are not upgraded before the 2016 election.

Great democracy, or greatest democracy? U-S-A!
