Detroit: Become Human is a 2018 adventure game developed by Quantic Dream and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

The Game Story

Detroit became human follows the independent journeys of multiple characters, with three androids in the year 2038. These main characters face life-or-death choices that have at times limited, at times severe ramifications. The snap decisions aim to change your mind or your position without any of the required introspection.

Separate aspects of Detroit’s overarching themes represent the three androids. The through line of Connor’s tale is racism against androids, which humans see as robots taking over all their work. Domestic abuse is relegated to Kara’s path and Markus represent the pursuance of liberation and freedom.

The Plot

There are 32 chapters in Detroit: Become Human’s story.

The chapters are as follows: The Hostage, Opening, Shades of Color, A New Home, The Painter, Partners, Stormy Night, Broken, The Interrogation, Fugitives, From the Dead, Waiting For Hank, On the Run, Jericho, The Nest, Time to Decide, Zlatko, Russian Roulette, Spare Parts, The Eden Club, The Pirate’s Cove, The Bridge, The Stratford Tower, Public Enemy, Midnight Train, Capitol Park, Meet Kamski, Freedom March, Last Chance, Connor; Crossroads, Night of the Soul and lastly the Battle For Detroit

The Characters

The game starts off with a direct introduction of Connor, one of the main characters in the game. The game depicts his role in the whole story, which is to hunt down deviants who are also androids like himself. The appearance of the android named Kara, also an important role in the game, then follows showing her unique story with her abusive owner who she happens to have killed. Thus, leading her and Connor to cross paths. Markus, last of the three main characters, is then introduced with his role being the main key to androids’ freedom from servitude and slavery.

The Setting

Future Detroit: “Detroit: Become Human” is set in Detroit in 2038. No longer the “Motor City,” Detroit is now the “Android City” after it was revitalized by the invention and introduction of androids into everyday life. Things become quite interesting when androids start behaving as if they are alive.

The Game UI

Alternatively, Detroit: Became Human falls into a diegetic user interface style.

The Game Play

I played it on my computer and not on a Play Station so, for me, the game Detroit Become Human, isn’t really for people who don’t play games that much or those people who aren’t familiar with basic game controls. However, the game is excellent and very unique in terms of its control system and how the game can be played. Dynamic mouse movements, and having to tap on different keys are some of the ways that the game requires for it to be played. This adds up to the cool and intense experience the player will have.

Advances from One Level to Another

The game consists of chapters, rather than levels. Detroit Become Human is known for its congenial and different story. If you think of it in a way, it almost seems like it is an interactive movie where you get to decide what happens. For every chapter, the player will get to experience all of the main characters’ lives and will get to decide their fate. Each time the player finishes a chapter, there will be an overview or a summary of the storyline and how the decisions affected and directed to another scenario. It will also show that there would be other possible outcomes but will not actually show it for they weren’t chosen in the first place. After the player reviews his/her performance in the chapter, he/her can proceed to the next one.

My Game Highlights

I have had a lot of great moments while playing the game. One would be the tension every time there is a crucial happening that occurs. Every action of the character depends on me. I have to be fast while moving the mouse, and the screen will indicate what key I would have to press and how long or short I will do it. Each time I do the wrong thing, it will obviously affect the character’s situation.

For the second one, it would be all of Connor’s scenes. Personally, my favorite would be the android named Connor. He is an android that works with the police, a detective to be precise. What I like about his character is, that all of his actions would eventually contradict with the rest of the main characters’. Considering the fact that the other two are deviants or fugitives, I will have to act against myself in a way for I’m the one who decides for the three.

Finally, one of the best moments I got to experience in the game, would most definitely be the decision-making. It is the most crucial part of the game, and the main key to achieving good results. Every time I will have to decide for the character, there will be different choices showed upon the screen. The hard part would be, when the choices are timed. It’s intense and extremely mind boggling and it will really have you engaged in the game.

Despite numerous downsides of the game, and all the criticism it received, I would still recommend this to everyone. It is a fun and interesting game that is worth the play.
